The title of the story is "A Basket of Mango Seeds."

Once, there lived a businessman in a village. In his younger days, he worked hard and made a lot of money. He accumulated great wealth. But at one point, a lot of robbery began happening in the village he lived in.

So the businessman became afraid. He wanted to safeguard his wealth. He thought, “Even if thieves come to my house, my wealth should not be lost.” So, he cleverly came up with a plan. Based on that, he split all his gold bars into small pellets and placed them inside mango seeds. He then put all the mango seeds in a broken basket and kept the basket in a storeroom.

Thus, all his gold was saved from robbery.

Two years passed.

At the end of those two years, the businessman fell seriously ill. As he lay dying, all of a sudden, he remembered the gold inside the mango seeds. Since none of his children knew about it, there was a high chance they might throw away the seeds, mistaking them for trash.

So, he wanted to reveal the secret. He called them and started explaining.

“Dear children, there is a basket in our storeroom with mango seeds in it. Split it among yourselves.”

While saying that, he breathed his last. He died.

But the secret behind the mango seeds was never revealed to his children clearly.

If he had mentioned it as gold or diamond, the children would have been highly alert. But as he referred to them as just mango seeds, they never paid attention to it.

On the seventh day after his death, they completed all his final rites. And it was then they remembered the basket their father had spoken about. They climbed to the storage area, took the basket, and split the mango seeds among themselves.

At that time, one of the sons asked, “What is this? I thought our father would leave something valuable for us. But this is just a basket full of mango seeds. What should we do with these?”

Then, the eldest daughter replied, “Brother, don't worry about it. In our childhood, I’ve heard a story like this. There will be a father in the story. And during his last breath, the father gives a basket full of mango seeds to his children. Everyone throws them away, but only the youngest son plants the seeds and grows them into trees. Soon, the trees bear thousands and thousands of mangoes, and that son becomes very rich. Maybe our father had preserved these seeds just for the same reason.”

It sounded like a valid reason to the others. So, they agreed. Each of them took 50 mango seeds and planted them in their lands. But months passed, and the seeds never sprouted.

Usually, a mango seed would sprout in a month or two. But these weren’t showing any sign of growth. Yet none of them doubted anything. They blindly believed in a story they had learned earlier.

But one servant, who worked in the house of the youngest son, started suspecting something.

“It’s been six months since we planted the seeds, but they still haven’t grown. Something’s wrong,” he thought.

He wanted to find the reason why they hadn’t sprouted yet, so he devised a plan.

One night, after everyone in his master's house had gone to sleep, he went to the field and started checking. He dug up one of the buried mango seeds and took it out. He broke it open. To his surprise, there was a gold pellet inside.

He got excited and felt happy. But he kept quiet and hid the secret without telling anyone.

Instead, he dug up all the places where the seeds had been buried, picked out all the gold pellets, and escaped from the household.

Even years after he left, the businessman’s children never knew what was inside those mango seeds. They never found or acquired the real wealth their father had preserved all his life.

Why? Because they believed in something blindly and never took a chance to think differently.
