A 20-year-old young woman gets married and moves into her husband's house. But something feels off — the house is strange, and it feels like a secret is buried within its walls. Anupama, the girl, senses danger. She knows deep down that she's trapped in a bad place with no easy way out.
So, what did she do next? Did she escape? Or did she resign to her fate?
Today, let me tell you a story. Sometimes in life, we feel trapped — caught in problems so deep that we see no way out. But after hearing this story, you may never think that way again.
Let me begin.
About 40 years ago, in Andhra, there lived a girl named Anupama. She lost both her parents in childhood and was raised by her grandmother. Because of poverty, Anupama had to stop school at the age of 14. She began working at a mill to support her grandmother.
Days passed. When she turned 20, an old man visited the mill. He claimed to be the owner and watched Anupama closely. Soon after, he approached her grandmother and asked for Anupama’s hand in marriage — not for himself, but for his younger brother. His brother was 20 years older than Anupama and was already married. His wife, despite being married for 15 years, had no children. Doctors confirmed her infertility, and the family started searching for a new bride.
So, the old man wanted Anupama as his brother’s second wife.
Initially, the grandmother hesitated, but within five minutes, she agreed. Anupama was shocked. She pleaded with her grandmother, saying she didn’t want the marriage. But she was forced into it. Everything happened quickly. Within five days, Anupama was married and sent off with tears in her eyes.
When Anupama arrived at her husband’s home, she was completely shocked. It was a remote village, lacking even basic amenities. The house was crowded with people, most of whom were unwelcoming. Her husband’s gaze and touch frightened her. Worse still, his first wife still lived in the same house and held all the power.
All of this disturbed Anupama, but she patiently observed everything. That’s when she noticed something strange about the first wife. Yes, her stomach was swollen — like a woman in her sixth month of pregnancy.
Her pregnancy made Anupama happy, but it also confused her. If the family already knew about this wonderful news, what was the intention behind marrying her? If the first wife was pregnant, why did they rush into another marriage?
Anupama found no answers. The people in the house didn’t speak to her, and her husband showed no interest in her either. For him, she was just an object of pleasure. So, Anupama felt frustrated and trapped. She became certain that there was a hidden reason behind her marriage.
Days passed. Three months into the marriage, a festival was celebrated in the village. A strange woman named Nallamma came to stay at their house. She was treated like royalty — her own room, her own cook, and even a servant. She performed eerie rituals inside the house, using skulls and bones. At the end of the pooja, she gave a special drink to everyone — including Anupama.
After drinking it, Anupama would faint. So, she began to suspect that the drink was drugged. The next day, she pretended to drink it but secretly avoided it. That night, she stayed awake and decided to observe what was happening.
Anupama was a smart girl. She had already explored the house and discovered a hidden vent in an upstairs storeroom — a vent that allowed her to see into Nallamma’s room. That night, she watched through the vent and overheard a shocking truth.
Seven months earlier, the family had met Nallamma for the first time. They had requested her help to have a child. She performed a ritual — and miraculously, the wife of Anupama’s husband conceived. The family was overjoyed.
But soon after that, disaster struck. The crops failed. Their trade ship sank. Family members began falling ill. So they called Nallamma again.
She returned with a solution — and that solution was Anupama. She told them the baby had been conceived in misfortune. To neutralize that bad luck, they had to bring a “lucky girl” into the house for 15 years. Only then would the family’s prosperity return. That girl needed to have a mole under her left eye and a bent finger on her left hand.
They searched far and wide. Anupama matched the signs. That’s why she was chosen.
But they made a mistake. They assumed she was uneducated and wouldn’t suspect anything. But now they realized she was intelligent — and that scared them. They reported this to Nallamma.
Nallamma had a cruel solution. She told them to lock Anupama in a dark room with iron chains. No one should see her for 15 years.
Anupama heard everything. Her body trembled. Her eyes froze. But she stayed calm. She knew that even the smallest mistake could cost her life. So she chose to act unaware and wait for the right moment.
From that day, Anupama lived cautiously. She pretended to be obedient. But every night, she thought about escape.
Months passed. The wife gave birth to a baby boy — the heir. On that day, Anupama lied to the family. She said, “I’ve always prayed for this. I made a vow to perform anga pradakshinam at the nearby temple every Friday. Please allow me to fulfill it.”
The family agreed. From then on, Anupama was sent to the temple every Friday with two guards. Their job was to make sure she didn’t run away.
But they never guessed what was on Anupama’s mind. She already knew that a train stopped at the village station every Friday. But she couldn’t escape on the first attempt — she’d be caught. She had to plan carefully.
She needed to estimate the time from the temple to the station, study the train schedule, find shortcuts, and hide essentials in advance.
So she used those few months wisely. The guards got used to her routine — bathing at the temple pond, changing clothes, performing rituals. Even if she was late, they thought it was normal.
Anupama also found a secret backdoor behind the temple that led directly to the station. She plotted everything.
And then came the day.
That Friday, Anupama went to the temple as usual. She entered the changing area. The guards waited outside. But she didn’t return.
They panicked and ran home. The family was shocked. For them, their source of luck was gone. They sent goons to check the train, the next stops, and searched thoroughly. But they found no trace of her.
Why?
Because once she boarded the train, Anupama changed completely. She shaved her head, changed into a man’s clothes, and disguised herself.
She had planned it all in advance. She switched trains and finally reached Goa.
Anupama knew she had fallen into a trap. Escape seemed impossible. But she didn’t panic. She didn’t act foolishly. She was calm, observant, and smart. And she escaped.
If you ever feel stuck in life — like you’re in a hopeless place — remember Anupama. Be patient. Be wise. Wait for your moment. Plan. And when the time comes… run.
I hope you’ve learned something through this story.
